The m/m thing

Loose Id has been getting some really wonderful m/m stories (primarily written by women and, though not necessarily enjoyed solely by women, it is in a market dominated by women buyers.) And they're often romantic, in the old traditional romantic sense. So what's with that? Are hetero stories not able to be romantic in the same way any longer?
