He doesn't want to be a pack Alpha. He definitely doesn't want the job of protecting the vet. Ruth's an Ice Queen and she's really cramping Arlin's freewheeling take-what'll-have-you style. Especially since Ruth smells like sex. How can a woman so cold smell so incredibly hot?

Ruth wants to think Arlin is just a kid. A very sexy kid and nothing more. Too bad for her she has to trust him with her life -- and what's more, with all of her secrets. They were gorgeous and totally unavailable. Friends were safe. At least, until they decided she needed a walk on the wild side and decreed they'd find the perfect man for her. Then all the rules changed.

Jake found the perfect straight guy for Jenni -- except Jake was falling for him himself. Jenni was getting interesting e-mail from a mystery man. Chris was finally ready to take on commitment-shy Adam.

Maybe screwing up would be worth it.

Publisher's Note: This book contains explicit sexual content, graphic language, and situations that some readers may find objectionable: Anal play/intercourse, male/male sexual practices.

To read an excerpt, visit: http://www.loose-id.com/THNNLex.aspx.

Grammar, Anyone?

Today starting about 9 AM EDT, the EPIC-eWorkshop loop (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/EPIC-eWorkshop) will host a free workshop for all those who need a little help from the Grammar Goddess, Cheryl Norman. After at least SIX months (maybe longer, I've mercifully forgotten) I'm at only 19,000 words on my latest ms. OK, so it's a historical and I don't do them. Woodiwiss, who is
credited with inventing the modern historical romance novel,
died Saturday. She was 68. Woodiwiss broke onto the scene in
1972 with The Flame in the Flower. The book, which featured
such now standard genre tropes as a historical backdrop and
flashy sex scenes, was an anomaly in its day, according to
her longtime publisher Avon Books, and went on to become a
huge bestseller, selling over two million copies after its
first four years in print.
Avon published all of Woodiwiss*s 13 novels in paperback,
while Morrow published her in hardcover. She was, as
bestselling author Susan Elizabeth Phillips put it, a
towering figure in the genre. "We all owe our careers to
her. She opened the world of romance to us as readers."
There are currently more than 26.7 million copies of
Woodiwiss*s novels in print; her last novel, Everlasting,
will be released in October.

She was the first biggie romance author I ever read. My story, The Wilding, is a twisted homage to The Flame and the Flower. To the lady who got me here! Happy journey to the next place.

My Loose Id Alpha series will be in print shortly. It's a Gothic story about a witch and a hero with with a brooding past in a small New England town...and a sort of menage with a very interesting partner. Faithful long-time readers may recognize it from the past, but I have had requests.

It also looks like sometime -- sooner than I expected -- my Alpha series will be in print, all in one novel.

And my new werewolf story, which is morphing into a kind of historical murder mystery or at least a romantic suspense story, has finally started moving again. The problem is that I don't do mysteries (I don't think the author isn't supposed to know who did it until the end) and I'm not sure I can do historicals. But so far it's been keeping me interested. I certainly didn't expect the plot twist I just woke up with this morning. After all, what does a werewolf who has blackouts do when someone is investigating the grisly murders of several people, including the werewolf's secret gay lover?

Agent Query

For those of you wondering -- yes, I hate querying agents. I hate querying publishers, too, but I really hate querying agents, since that's what I'm doing right now. At 2:30 a.m. Maybe that's not the best time.

I had a lovely chat with an agent (I usually do have lovely chats when I pitch except for those truly memorable ones where I didn't) who referred me on to her senior partner. Yes, indeed. Been having lots of fun, too, on the third of my were trilogy. And here is the unedited WIP:

They were almost mouth to mouth. Shit, Yeah, it was Grey all right. The same scars criss-crossing his face. The same scowl. Grey said people were put off by his scars. He’d even seriously thought Rome should be put off because Grey was older. But there was a hell of a lot more to him than some old wounds or white hair at his temples. Ah, hell. Grey’s scent was just as sexy as ever. His body was just as muscular, tough and potent. Rome swallowed, his throat suddenly going dry.
Grey barked out a short laugh. “You’re getting mighty close for a fighting man. Do you want to fight me or fuck me?”
Both. Holy God, he wanted both.
“Why’re you here?” Rome kicked, landing a blow right under the chin of the bartender, who had been inching toward his nightstick.
“To fetch you back, boy. We need you.”
“Why?”
We need you wasn’t I need you. But then Grey wasn’t much on telling folks what he wanted. Hadn’t that been the problem? Grey’s dumb ass “I don’t feel anything” act was why Rome had vowed he wasn’t ever going back. And he wasn’t.
Grey slammed the next would-be brawler onto the bar and then slid the unconscious man onto a bar stool, where he slumped, completely out for the count. “Well, like they said in another family, we’ve got a little proposition we don’t think you can refuse.”
He wasn’t doing what Grey or the rest told him to do any more. But somehow Rome found himself inching out of the bar when a few minutes ago all he’d wanted was to stay and fight. Grey was at his back –protecting him? herding him? both were possible -- and neither of them bothered to say anything until they stepped out into the night air.
Then it seemed Grey had plenty to say.
“Shit, boy, haven’t I told you to keep out of stupid damn brawls? I don’t care if your wolf is up and you want to go howl. Fighting like that just isn’t smart. Non-weres can get the best of us if there are enough of them. I’m proof of that. If it hadn’t been for your Daddy—“
“I know the lecture. How Dad saved you from death when you got into a fight where you were outnumbered. How I’m just a stupid pup with no sense. How you should never try to mess with anyone when the odds are bad. I’ve got it memorized.” Rome threw his hand up in the air. “Now you need to ask me if I care.”
“You’re an idiot, Rome.”
“I’m on my own now. All grown up and not listening to what my elders tell me. I’m not going back.”
“You fucking well are. I promised.”
“Ohh, because you promised. That’s why. Be honest. If I did die in some damn fight, you’ve already shown you don’t give a damn. Good riddance, I’d finally stop bothering you. Right?”
Before he got his answer, lightning struck—lights danced in front of his eyes before darkness slid, peacefully but inevitably, around him.
Grey spat once, flexed the fist that had knocked out Rome and looked down at the huddled heap in front of him. Damn, the boy had turned out handsome. Handsome as his daddy, but with his mama’s pretty eyes.
Pretty boy. He’d never gone for pretty boys before. Non-weres would call Rome a twinkie. Weres didn’t like things that sweet. They went for meat. Preferably raw. But damned if this twinkie wasn’t tempting. Rome had been tempting him for years, in fact. When he wasn’t getting Grey mad enough to do something like hit him.
Ah, hell. There was no way around it, no way to make little of Rome or ignore him. Rome wasn’t a pretty boy even though he had the face of an angel. If he had been, Grey would never have looked twice. What he was, though, remained to be seen.
The kid had a tongue on him, though. He could hone right in and make a man’s head buzz.
You don’t give a damn. Right?
Ask me if I care. Do I? “Yup. I guess I forgot to ask if you cared.” Grey hoisted Rome’s dead weight over his shoulder and headed for the truck. “But then again, boy, you forgot the part about even when it looks safe, you still gotta keep your eyes open.”

Herman Acapulco Mellon

Gasped his fishy last sometime last night or this morning. Just saw the forensic recreation of George Washington and --you know--he's kind of sexy. Or he was when he was in his 20s and alive and however many hundred years ago that was. I always had a soft spot for George -- I mean, think of how hard it was to try to be a real leader in the middle of a revolution with no particular role models. And he refused to become a dictator or king (all right, he got stuffy in his old age, but he's forgiven.) Yay, George. Niiiice.

Oh, and I'm really relieved about my Stay reviews. People seem to like it. I don't think readers really want to know--they want their books, darn it, not reasons why they don't get them as fast as they want.

But what the heck. I'm tired and for some reason I feel like telling whoever is out there in cyberspace what my "typical" day is like.

I get up and run to get the kids up -- the first is out by 7 a.m. and she's the night owl. She just makes it. The early bird's bus is ALWAYS late. He has to wait until 8:30 today and his school starts at 8:45. In between buses I answer LI email and start on the day job.

My mother, who is sliding ungracefully into middle stage dementia (senility for the uninitiated) gets up in a foul mood -- I've learned she always does since it's been a while since coffee and meds. I remind her to TAKE her meds, which causes much grumbling and snarls, and head up to work because if I stay around there will be an unproductive argument. The DH is sick and grumpy that I dare to work at home when he wants to sleep. Jack hammers start outside--there is going to be roadwork done on our usually quiet street. Yay.

During the day I get calls saying my daughter doesn't want to use the special accomodations she has during testing for her attention and dyslexia issues. I find this after her testing and btw, do I want to talk to her teacher about the D she got. (She forgot to turn in her homework.) I take my mother to the bank where she doesn't really get what she has to do for her new accounts and everyone turns to me to explain it to her. Again.

I get the in home person who is trying to help me with the son's behavioral issues and we agree we're stumped and he's getting increasingly hostile. She leaves, I go back to work and the son returns. He's actually in a good mood although his school report is not so good.

The DH wakes up and gets pizza for everyone so no one has to cook.

Then I sit down to write because, well, besides everything else, I'm a writer. RWA conventions are wonderful and terrible. Wonderful because I see people I know and want to see (and some I don't, of course) that I would never see anywhere else. Terrible because I never feel adequate enough. There's always some other prize to win that everyone else seems to have--more talent, fame, money, smarts. Whatever.

Then tongiht I accidentally hit Treva Harte in look for the name in the blog rather than going to my blog. (I did say some people have more smarts, right?) I hope you enjoy it. It's about a world famous athlete of the future who meets an errand runner who delivers pizza and surprises into his life. The idea is that every few weeks a few people can transform themselves into someone entirely different--but they need a partner to help them do so. Lucy, the errand runner, is convinced that she's met her partner when she meets the athlete, C.J. He's not quite as convinced, but he'd sure like to sleep with the errand runner. And then some other stuff happens. Check out www.Changelingpress.com

And sometime in the not too distant future, I will be releasing my sequel to Walk Away. This one is called Stay and it's about the were who got away in the last story--Lowell. Lowell finally meets his mate but he's a moody kind of guy and his romance isn't an easy one.

Romance in RL

I had lots of readers suggest that I talk about how to keep romance alive in marriage or my most romantic moment or generally romance in RL. MY Real Life! Huh.

The DH is sort of Mr. Anti-Romance. I don't mean he's not passionate or things like that. But the night he proposed we were at a party and went off by ourselves to look at the sun setting on a lake. No. He didn't propose. He took me home and then went out to do errands. Then, when I was asleep, he woke me up to pop the question. Yeah, yeah, whatever, honey, let me sleep.

Right now we're trying to work while the kids are home for the summer (and don't get me going on that because THAT is anti-romance as well.) So romantic moments are few and far between.

But, you know, I'm all right with understated romance. I like to feel sure things are real and not fantasy in my own life. So here's a romantic moment that might not seem like a lot to other folks. The DH usually scowls (he can brood really well) but when he sees me in a crowd, his face lights up. And I'll take that because it's real to me. I like real romance.

What I Miss/Love in My Life as a Writer

I'd love for you to talk about what you miss in life because you are a writer now, and what you love so in life now because you are a writer.

And ask readers to write about what they want in life yet, and how they will work for it
Cathie

This was another suggestion from a reader during a newsletter contest of mine. And yes, do check out the newsletter. I have a download of Turns riding on the next one.

But what do I miss...time. I probably never would have down time in my life because I juggle a lot of roles and people and responsibilities. Not writing might give me a little more time to just veg. I don't really do that. The brain may haze over from overwork, but it's not the same and really relaxing.

OTOH, what I've gotten is joy. My writing is still a source of joy for me. I had writer's block for twenty years and when I finally sat down to write again, it was like the best drug in the world. I was sooo buzzed! That was many years ago. Writing is a bit more of a chore than a drug nowadays, but it's a really, really good chore.

newsletter: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TrevaHarte

Newest Release for July

Pretty, huh? I thought of the idea on a plane to an RWA conference. That's my excuse. It's just your average futuristic shapeshifter where people are constantly shifting every month or so into some other mutant/human. And no one likes mutants, if they believe they exist at all.

It will be out late July. I can't cringe because no one ever asks me. I think they're afraid.

The answer is that I have no clue. I'm pretty sure that often they come from conversations I have with people that sort of merge together in my brain and come oozing up in some mutant form. Sometimes I get an idea from a scene in my head that springs up and won't go away. I love coming up with titles and trying to think of a story to go with them, but I always forget those stories...usually because I think of them while driving and they're long gone by the time I get to anywhere I can record them. My last stories started with me thinking about why the heck do people like werewolf and vamp stories? I wasn't too interested until I started to think about pack hierarchy with wolves. That interested me and I took off with it because if humans are willing to be dominated, there has to be a reason. Now if they're half-canine and half-human--that's a twist.

Interview

This one is up until next Sunday and it is about MEEE.

http://strictlyseductive.blogspot.com

Thanks, Anisa!

Back Again

Remembered I had a blog. Wonder if you all remembered as well. I'm fighting with wolfies on the creative front -- my werewolf sequel to Walk Away is coming along slowly. These wolves are much more difficult than those in Walk Away.

Have you ever noticed how hard sequels are to write? Well, if you write them. If you read them, they can be hard to read, I suppose. I've noticed some authors have patterns to their series. The first one is a gripper, the middle one is a bit flat, and then a bang up conclusion in the third. I think mine start off a bit amusing and then the second one gets darker. Stay sure is.

Because I'm insane and I like RL to come up and smack me a lot, I told the daughter she could invite her best friend over for New Year's Eve. The presents have been unwrapped (my mom got me something I wanted this year--wow) and we're now madly dismantling the downstairs so we can get the floors done before we finally, finally, finally are finished with our addition and can move into it. In the meantime the rest of the house looks a bit...cramped. Try taking a lot of stuff from the main floor of your house and moving it elsewhere and then putting Christmas decorations in. Doesn't work as an interior design statement.

I should be helping the DH, who is hauling furniture and I plan to. I got some nice encouraging letters that turned into eventual rejections a few months ago but lately there has been nothing. A black hole. An agent emailed me to say she was clearing off her desk (never encouraging) and would get back to me soon. Several months ago. I figured whatever had happened, it was hardly worth pursuing now. Whether it was disorganization or disinterest, neither of us were interested enough. I sent off three manuscripts months ago and got...nothing. I did get a--tell us if you haven't heard back in a week. Yeah. Holding my breath til I hear. Hmm. That may have been last week, actually.

I really have to get over this total turning off I have when I send something out. I should be outraged. Nervous. Something. After all, Loose Id really works to get manuscripts back and, God knows, everyone at LI is busy enough. But I have worked hard to cultivate a "whatever"attitude about sending out my manuscripts. So now, even when I'm honestly convinced they are publishable, I can't work myself up into a good writerly frenzy about what happens when I send them off.

The Inner Editor

My inner editor has been getting wacky lately. My work life is hectic and so is my personal life. (I think that's enough to say--everyone's life is complex and difficult, so there's no point discussing it. 'Cept mine is the most difficult, of course!) I figured I'd get to work writing.

But first I bought the DH a birthday present (his 50th--birthday, not present, I haven't had time to buy presents) and cleared up a bit from the SDJ and answered email from LI. And I wrote a paragraph. Then I went to sleep. Then I did some more clean up from the SDJ and got the youngest kiddo from the school bus stop. And wrote another paragraph.

At this rate, I should have a book sometime before I die. Why can't I write when I actually, really, truly have time to write??

Embracing the Blog

OK. I think I've complained enough. I shall now see what my blog can do for me. Besides, apparently I really don't want to start work on my latest story. I don't understand why. I like the characters. I'm becoming fascinated by the werewolf world I'm creating. But, ya know, I'm resisting. So, to the blog.

1) Who am I? You can check my website, of course. That's www.trevaharte.com. I was reading other author blogs and websites this morning (I really am resisting writing today) and realized my website tells you what I want you to know but maybe not what you want to know. It's friendly, but not terribly intimate. Anyhow. I do a lot of things--the SDJ full-time, the daughter, mother and wife thing far too often, the Editor in Chief job at Loose Id a lot, and the writing...well, I talked about the writing. I compartmentalize my life because sometimes it's easier and because the people in my different lives don't particularly care what's going on in the other worlds.

2) What do I write? Mostly, whatever I feel like. That doesn't always mean good sales (though sometimes there is a wonderful joining of marketability and my interests) or necessarily good writing. OTOH, it makes me much happier when I write. Writing can be difficult enough without trying to force yourself into doing something you're not pleased to do. Of course part of being a professional writer is learning to write what you and others want to see.

Oh. The really short answer to what I write is cross-genre erotic romance, usually paranormal, and often not quite what is expected.

I think that's quite enough for now. The weres are starting to look pretty good at this point. Thanks, blog!

Blogs?

So why are blogs a big deal anyhow? He had read about one guy who took weeks to get back into his routine and write once he was away.

I do understand. So far this Sat. morning I've answered a ton of stuff for Loose Id, dealt with the cancellation of a birthday party and tried to explain it to my kid, and started to do a little writing on my own story. I'll probably work a bit on the SDJ and then do my least favorite thing of all these duties--work on the yard. I'm only doing that because we're hosting a party next weekend and the overgrown weed look isn't in this year.

All of this always makes me wonder if I'd be better at one thing if I just settled down to do one thing.

So. I have not one but two new books out this month. Actually new is a relative term. They were sweated over and created several years ago and I have a bad attitude about most of my books--once they're done, I'm done. I shove them out of the authorial nest and let them fly. These books were published before and swaggered out into the world to try their fortune.
But what to do when they come back? I love my stories and I hope others find them and love them, but they are distanced from me now. I think that's protection for me for when my writing goes out into the world and has to stand on its own. I can't help them any longer, so I forget about them.

Now my books are good, smart books and they were lucky enough to find new homes. Why Me? is in e-book format and print with Loose Id, www.loose-id.com, the e-book publishing company you will probably hear me talk about all too often since that's where my non-author self works a lot. Why Me?
got me my RWA pro pin several years ago. At the local RWA meeting I had to explain it was a paranormal erotic romantic suspense with some humor thrown in.
The other, my one and only contemporary erotic romance series, the Time Series, went with Liquid Silver Books, www.liquidsilverbooks.com. The Time Series contain the first books I ever did once I got over my twenty year bout of writer's block and I love them for that reason alone. I love them even more because three years later I took those suckers out, saw there was something that could be saved from newbie errors and I redid them and made them better.

Still, it's hard for me to promote a re-release. Now I'm so far from the book's birth that it's hard to re-create that enthusiasm. I can remember the rush, but it's just a memory. I suppose the good thing about books is that they're always there, waiting for the next chance. My past thrill can be a reader's present enthusiasm. The book waits for the next reader, even after others have moved on. Except for the promoting (ugh, the promoting) the book doesn't need me any longer. It just needs a reader to love it.

So, forgive me if all I tell you is they're good books and I worked hard on them. They deserve better, but I'm a bad mommy. Fortunately they turned out great even with me as the parent.
